Internal Medicine –Auckland– New Zealand

Location:

The city of Auckland is located in the northern part of the North Island. It is one of the most densely populated areas in New Zealand with about 500,000 inhabitants and the largest city of the country. Many wine regions, beautiful beaches, pristine rain forests and the Hauraki Gulf, surround the city. Auckland has a mild maritime climate, with temperatures fluctuating from 11 degrees in the winter and 20 degrees in the summer. Auckland is one of the areas with the most sunshine hours in New Zealand, with more than 2000 hours of sun per year. Auckland was recently rated as the third best place to live in the world.

The hospital is the main centre for acute care and referral within the area, which has a catchment of 500 000 people. It is an accredited 800 bed teaching hospital and includes most medical and surgical specialties.

The general medicine department has undergone significant change in recent months including moving towards home based wards, reshaping the 42-bed medical assessment unit and development of the “hospital in the home”. The effectiveness of the home based wards model is currently enhanced by further refinement and will be implemented at the end of this year. Part of this refinement includes developing an Acute Medicine model of service delivery to complement the ward-based teams and provide senior decision-making early in the patient care.
