Christchurch is a vibrant city on New Zealand’s South Island with a population of approximately 380.000. The city is known for its wide range of recreational activities and its location close to the breath-taking natural landscapes of New Zealand. Next to the city are two harbours where water sports can be practiced. On the other side of town is the picturesque town of Akaroa (founded by French settlers) and Hanmer, the local hot springs. Ski areas can be reached within an hour from Christchurch. The city has excellent educational facilities with several public and private schools. There are also two university campuses which offer a wide range of different studies.
The hospital in question is the largest academic hospital on the South Island and provides care to 600.000 people from the Canterbury region. The Ophthalmology department consists of 14 ophthalmologists, medical assistants and a team of nurses. The department is affiliated with the Christchurch School of Medicine, which teaches both students and physicians. Vocational training in ophthalmology is an important part of the teaching activities of the department.
On behalf of this hospital in New Zealand we are looking for an ophthalmologist for a full-time position. The hours can be discussed in consultation with the employer. Permanent appointment or appointment for a fixed term are both possible.
You will provide tertiary care to the people of Christchurch. That is why you will treat the entire spectrum of Ophthalmology together with the Ophthalmic team. The team is now located in a new, purpose-built outpatient building next to the hospital, making it possible to better treat the large patient population. Because of this, more than 50.000 patients are treated here annually. In addition, the team has access to specialized ophthalmology operating rooms in the adjacent main hospital campus. The team provides care for the Christchurch and Canterbury populations. The successful candidate will be part of a large and motivated team of general and specialist trained ophthalmologists, orthoptists, optometrists, nurses, technicians, administrators and medical secretaries. Part of the tasks will consist of contributing to the education of the medical staff.
Candidates must possess excellent social, educational, administrative and organizational skills to properly fill the position. Candidates with a fellowship are preferred.
