Psychiatrist – Hutt Valley – New Zealand
Hutt Valley is a large area by the Hutt River in the Wellington region. There are several cities in the Hutt Valley, of which Upper and Lower Hut are the most important. These cities are both outskirts of Wellington and together with Wellington and Porirua, they form the Wellington district.
The hospital is located in Lower Hutt, a city with around 103.000 residents. Hutt Valley is located on the Cook Strait, this is the body of water that separates the North Island from the South Island. The region has a temperate, almost Mediterranean climate. The average temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius in the summer and around 5 degrees in the winter. The position is located in a secondary care hospital with 260 beds that offers care to 140.000 people. The Psychiatry department mainly treats a patient population that is over 65 years old and suffers from mental health problems or dementia with significant behavioural and psychological symptoms. Psychiatric care is mainly provided in the community, but acute cases are admitted to this hospital.
On behalf of this hospital we are looking for a psychiatrist for a part-time (0.5 FTE) permanent position.
The successful candidate will treat and support a geriatric population. One will work 32 hours per fortnight. Ideally, these hours are spread over 3 days a week. Moreover, one will also be part of a multidisciplinary team, in order to provide the best care for the patients. The work tasks will consist of the assessment and treatment of a wide range of diagnoses and often complex co-morbidity (this will usually take place at the patient’s home), time-limited case management and collaboration with multiple specialisms. In addition, you will work closely with your patients, the family, general practitioners and other clinical teams. Lastly, you will assist registrars and interns where necessary.
For this position, candidates must have excellent communicational, cooperation, administrative, social and management skills. Moreover, one must have experience with the above-mentioned patient population and clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team. In addition, you must be in the possession of a valid driver’s license.
